Bird Balanced Diet & Seed Vs Pellet Debate

The seeds versus pellets debate is one of the most common questions bird owners face. The truth is that neither is perfect alone—your bird needs both to thrive.

Seeds are nutritious and enriching, offering natural foraging behaviour and essential fats, but they're often high in calories and low in certain vitamins like vitamin A. Pellets, on the other hand, are formulated to provide balanced nutrition and are fortified with essential nutrients, but they lack the mental stimulation and variety that seeds provide. The ideal approach is a combination: pellets as your bird's staple (around 60–70% of their diet) paired with a variety of seeds, fresh vegetables, and occasional fruits (30–40%). This ensures complete nutrition whilst maintaining natural feeding behaviours.

Watch your bird's weight, feather condition, and energy levels—these are the best indicators that your diet mix is working. Every species has slightly different needs, so consulting your avian vet about the right balance for your particular bird is always worthwhile.
