Bird Recognising Illness In Birds

Spotting illness early in birds can be the difference between a full recovery and serious complications. Birds are remarkably good at hiding signs of illness until they're quite unwell, so understanding what to look for is crucial for any bird owner.

The most reliable early warning signs include changes in behaviour and appetite. A healthy bird should be active, vocal, and eating regularly. If your bird becomes unusually quiet, fluffs up its feathers constantly, loses interest in food, or seems lethargic, these are red flags worth investigating. Similarly, changes in droppings—whether they're watery, discoloured, or abnormally frequent—often indicate digestive or systemic problems.

Physical symptoms are equally important to monitor. Look for discharge around the eyes or nostrils, difficulty breathing, wheezing, or changes in posture. Swollen eyes, matted or ruffled feathers that don't smooth down, or a reluctance to perch normally also warrant a vet visit. The key is knowing your bird's baseline behaviour and personality, so any deviation becomes obvious. When in doubt, consult an avian veterinarian—early intervention can prevent minor issues from becoming serious.
