About the Rottweiler
The Rottweiler is a large, powerful working dog with roots in Roman cattle-driving dogs. The breed takes its name from the German town of Rottweil, where it was used by butchers to herd livestock and pull carts. Today Rottweilers serve as police, military, and search-and-rescue dogs, as well as devoted family companions.
Rottweilers are confident, calm, and deeply loyal dogs. They are highly intelligent and respond well to consistent, positive training. Despite their imposing size, well-bred, well-socialised Rottweilers are gentle and affectionate with their families.
Rottweilers grow slowly — many do not reach their full adult weight until 2–3 years of age. Monitoring weight throughout puppyhood is especially important, as rapid weight gain can stress developing joints and increase the risk of hip and elbow dysplasia.

Weight Management Tips for Rottweilers
- Do not over-exercise Rottweiler puppies — avoid high-impact activity before 18 months to protect growing joints.
- Weigh monthly and plot the trend — a flat or declining curve after 18 months may indicate the dog has reached its adult weight.
- Feed a large-breed puppy formula to support slow, controlled growth.
- Adults need 1–2 hours of moderate exercise per day — brisk walks, swimming, or play.
- Watch for a visible waist from above and ribs you can feel without pressing hard.
- Spayed/neutered Rottweilers are more prone to weight gain — adjust portions accordingly.
