Standard Poodle Weight Chart & Growth Guide

Everything you need to know about your Standard Poodle's healthy weight from puppy through adulthood.

About the Standard Poodle

The Standard Poodle is the largest of the three Poodle varieties and is widely regarded as one of the most intelligent dog breeds in the world. Originally bred as a water retriever in Germany, the breed became highly popular in France as a companion and circus dog.

Standard Poodles are known for their curly, low-shedding coats, athletic build, and exceptional trainability. They excel in obedience, agility, and even as service dogs. Despite their elegant appearance, they are energetic and require regular exercise.

Maintaining a healthy weight is important for Poodles, as excess weight can stress their joints and predispose them to hip dysplasia — a condition this breed is prone to.

Weight Management Tips

  • Standard Poodles are active dogs — aim for 1–2 hours of exercise daily.
  • Feed measured portions; Poodles can overeat if given free access to food.
  • You should feel ribs easily without pressing hard, but they should not be visible.
  • Weigh monthly and track the trend rather than individual readings.
  • Grooming sessions are a good time to check body condition by running hands along the ribcage and spine.
