About the Great Dane
The Great Dane is one of the world's largest dog breeds, often called the "Apollo of Dogs." Despite their imposing size, Great Danes are known for being gentle, affectionate, and patient — earning them the nickname "gentle giants." They make loving family dogs who are surprisingly well-suited to indoor living.
Great Danes have one of the fastest growth rates of any dog breed, gaining several kilograms per week during their first year. This rapid growth makes proper nutrition during puppyhood critically important to prevent skeletal abnormalities and developmental issues.
Due to their giant size, Great Danes are particularly susceptible to bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), a life-threatening condition. Monitoring weight, feeding from raised bowls, and splitting meals into multiple small portions per day can help reduce this risk.

Keeping Your Great Dane at a Healthy Weight
- Feed large-breed puppy food during the first year to support controlled growth.
- Split daily food into 2–3 small meals to reduce bloat risk — never one large meal.
- Avoid vigorous exercise immediately before or after meals (wait 1–2 hours).
- Moderate exercise — 30–60 minutes per day of walking — is enough for adults.
- Weigh monthly; extra weight puts extreme stress on their large joints and spine.
- Giant breeds need longer to reach full skeletal maturity — typically 2 full years.
