Golden Retriever Weight Chart & Growth Guide

Everything you need to know about monitoring your Golden Retriever's weight and growth — from puppy to full adult.

About the Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world — and for good reason. Originally bred in the Scottish Highlands in the 1800s as hunting dogs, they are now famous for their friendly, tolerant attitude and intelligence, making them superb family companions.

These medium-to-large dogs are known for their dense, lustrous coats of gold and their love of play. They are highly trainable, which is why they excel as guide dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, and therapy animals. Despite their size, they tend to be gentle and patient with children and other animals.

Keeping track of your Golden Retriever's weight is an important part of their health care. Obesity is a common issue in this breed, and maintaining a healthy weight can help prevent joint problems, heart disease, and diabetes.

Tips for Maintaining a Healthy Weight

  • Weigh your dog monthly and log results in a tracking app.
  • You should be able to feel (but not easily see) your dog's ribs — a good indicator of healthy weight.
  • Feed measured portions according to your vet's recommendation, not ad-lib.
  • Golden Retrievers need 1–2 hours of exercise daily to prevent weight gain.
  • Limit treats to less than 10% of daily caloric intake.
  • Have your vet check thyroid levels if your dog gains weight despite a controlled diet.
