About the French Bulldog
French Bulldogs — affectionately called "Frenchies" — have soared in popularity in recent years, consistently ranking among the top-five most popular breeds worldwide. Despite the name, the breed was developed in England and later refined in France, where it became a fashionable companion for city dwellers.
French Bulldogs are compact, muscular dogs with distinctive bat ears and a short, smooth coat. They are known for their calm, affectionate temperament and adapt well to apartment living since they don't require as much exercise as larger breeds. They are playful and alert but are not known for excessive barking.
As a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed, French Bulldogs can be sensitive to heat and over-exertion. Keeping them at a healthy weight reduces strain on their respiratory system, joints, and heart — making weight monitoring especially important.

Keeping Your French Bulldog at a Healthy Weight
- Weigh your Frenchie monthly — small dogs can gain weight quickly.
- Feed measured portions twice a day rather than free-feeding.
- Limit treats; French Bulldogs are prone to weight gain due to their low activity level.
- Short, gentle walks (20–30 min/day) are ideal — avoid exercise in heat to protect their breathing.
- Overweight Frenchies have more difficulty breathing — this breed is particularly sensitive to excess weight.
- Consult your vet for a breed-appropriate diet if your Frenchie is not on a healthy weight trajectory.
