About the Border Collie
The Border Collie is widely regarded as the most intelligent dog breed in the world. Originally developed along the Anglo-Scottish border for herding sheep, these medium-sized dogs are known for their intense stare (the "eye"), remarkable agility, and tireless work ethic.
Border Collies excel at virtually every dog sport — agility, flyball, obedience, and herding trials — and they need a significant amount of both physical and mental stimulation to thrive. Without it, they can develop obsessive behaviors and anxiety.
Due to their athleticism, Border Collies tend to stay lean naturally when given adequate exercise. However, a pet Border Collie with limited activity may gain weight over time. Their dense coat can mask weight changes, making regular monitoring important.
Keeping Your Border Collie at a Healthy Weight
- Provide 1–2 hours of vigorous exercise daily, ideally with herding, agility, or off-leash running.
- Feed a high-protein, moderate-fat diet formulated for active breeds.
- Adjust food intake based on seasonal activity changes — they may need less in winter.
- Keep treats to under 10% of daily calories; use kibble pieces for training.
- Weigh quarterly — their lean build means a few extra kilograms is very noticeable and concerning.
- Brush their coat regularly to feel for hidden weight changes beneath the fur.
