About the Australian Shepherd
The Australian Shepherd — affectionately known as the "Aussie" — is a highly intelligent, energetic herding breed developed in the American West, despite its name. Prized for their agility, trainability, and work ethic, Aussies excel at dog sports, herding, search-and-rescue, and as therapy dogs.
Aussies are known for their striking merle coats, heterochromia (different colored eyes), and intense focus. They thrive when given a job to do and can become anxious or destructive without adequate physical and mental stimulation.
Because of their high activity levels, Australian Shepherds tend to burn calories efficiently and are not generally prone to obesity. However, sedentary Aussies — those getting insufficient exercise — can gain weight, which is harmful to their active joints and overall health.

Keeping Your Aussie at a Healthy Weight
- Provide 1–2 hours of vigorous exercise daily — fetch, agility, or off-leash running.
- Adjust food portions based on activity level — working Aussies need more calories than pets.
- Feed twice daily with a high-quality food formulated for active medium breeds.
- Avoid free-feeding; portion control is still important even for active dogs.
- Weigh quarterly and look for a visible waist tuck and easily palpable ribs.
- Mental stimulation (puzzle toys, training) helps prevent stress-eating behaviors.
