About the Pug
The Pug is a small, compact dog with a charming wrinkled face, curly tail, and big personality. Originally bred as companions for Chinese emperors, Pugs have been beloved pets across Europe and the world for centuries. They are sociable, playful, and devoted — often described as having a "big dog in a small body" personality.
As a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed, Pugs have naturally restricted airways that make breathing more labored, especially during exercise or in heat. This means they tend to be less active than other breeds, putting them at high risk for obesity.
Weight management is one of the most important aspects of Pug care. Even a small amount of excess weight dramatically worsens their respiratory issues and puts stress on their joints, spine, and heart. Keeping a Pug lean is one of the kindest things you can do for their long-term health.

Keeping Your Pug at a Healthy Weight
- Stick to measured portions — Pugs will eat as much food as they can find.
- Use low-calorie treats or small pieces of carrot or apple for training rewards.
- Provide 20–30 minutes of gentle activity daily, split into short sessions.
- Avoid outdoor exercise in hot or humid weather due to breathing risks.
- Weigh monthly — even 0.5 kg gain is significant for a small breed like this.
- A healthy Pug should have a visible waist when viewed from above; ribs should be felt but not seen.
