About the Maine Coon
The Maine Coon is one of the largest domestic cat breeds in the world and the official state cat of Maine, USA. Known for their tufted ears, bushy tail, shaggy coat, and dog-like personality, Maine Coons are often called "the gentle giants" of the cat world. They are playful, affectionate, and highly intelligent.
Unlike most cat breeds, Maine Coons are slow to mature. They don't reach their full size until 3–5 years of age, making their growth period one of the longest of any domestic cat. During this extended growth phase, it's important not to restrict calories inappropriately.
Maine Coons are naturally large and muscular, so their healthy weight range is wider than average cats. It's important to distinguish between healthy muscle mass and excess fat when evaluating their weight. Regular vet assessments can help confirm your Maine Coon is in optimal condition.

Keeping Your Maine Coon at a Healthy Weight
- Don't restrict food during the growth phase (up to 3–4 years) — Maine Coons need adequate nutrition to grow properly.
- After full maturity, switch to adult maintenance feeding to prevent excess weight gain.
- Provide vertical spaces, cat trees, and interactive toys — Maine Coons love to climb and play.
- Feed twice daily with measured portions; their large size means larger portions than average cats.
- Weigh monthly; even in a large breed, consistent upward trends signal the need for diet adjustment.
- Feel along the ribs under their thick fur — you should be able to feel them without pressing hard.
