Dachshund Weight Chart & Growth Guide
Weight charts for both Standard and Miniature Dachshunds — from puppy through adulthood.
About the Dachshund
The Dachshund — affectionately known as the "sausage dog" or "wiener dog" — is a breed with a very distinctive elongated body and short legs. Originally bred in Germany to hunt badgers in burrows, they are energetic, curious, and sometimes stubborn dogs with a big personality in a small package.
Dachshunds come in two sizes (Standard and Miniature) and three coat types (smooth, wirehaired, and longhaired). Despite their small stature, they have a loud bark, a strong prey drive, and a playful spirit.
Weight management is especially critical for Dachshunds. Their long spines are susceptible to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), and carrying excess weight dramatically increases the risk of back problems. Even a small amount of extra weight can make a significant difference in a dog of this size.

Keeping Your Dachshund at a Healthy Weight
- Even 0.5 kg of extra weight is significant for a Miniature Dachshund — weigh every 2–4 weeks.
- Use ramps instead of stairs to reduce spinal stress, especially if overweight.
- Feed precise measured portions — small dogs have slow metabolisms.
- Aim for 30–60 minutes of gentle daily exercise (walks, not jumping or rough play).
- Ribs should be easily felt with light pressure; a visible waist from above is a good sign.
- Consult your vet immediately if your Dachshund shows back pain — weight is often a contributing factor.
