About the British Shorthair
The British Shorthair is one of the oldest and most popular cat breeds in the UK and increasingly worldwide. Famous for their round faces, chubby cheeks, dense plush coats, and sturdy body type, British Shorthairs have an almost teddy-bear-like appearance that has made them beloved companions and internet celebrities.
British Shorthairs are calm, even-tempered cats that enjoy human companionship without being overly demanding. They adapt well to indoor life and are generally quieter than many other breeds, making them excellent apartment cats.
The breed is prone to obesity, especially after spaying or neutering. Their naturally stocky build, combined with relatively low energy levels, means weight can creep up without careful attention. British Shorthairs also have a very slow maturity rate — they don't reach full size until 3–5 years of age.

Keeping Your British Shorthair at a Healthy Weight
- Do not restrict food during the growth phase (up to 3–4 years); they need it to develop properly.
- After neutering, reduce portions by about 20% to prevent post-surgery weight gain.
- Encourage play with wand toys and laser pointers — British Shorthairs are less self-motivated than active breeds.
- Avoid free-feeding in adulthood; scheduled twice-daily meals help control intake.
- Weigh monthly; their dense coat makes it hard to visually spot weight gain.
- A healthy British Shorthair should have a defined waist when viewed from above, even with their stocky build.
