About the American Shorthair

The American Shorthair descends from the working cats that came over on European ships, kept aboard to protect cargo from rodents. Selective breeding began in the early 1900s from that same free-roaming farm and ship population, which is why the breed still looks and behaves like a practical working cat rather than an ornamental one.

The result is a solid, medium-to-large cat with a broad chest, heavy bone and dense muscle. It is genuinely a heavier cat than it looks, and that catches owners out in both directions: a healthy American Shorthair can feel surprisingly substantial, while an overweight one is easy to excuse as “just a big-boned cat”.

They are also one of the more food-motivated pedigree breeds, and their working-cat metabolism assumes a level of daily activity most indoor cats never get. The combination makes obesity the single most common health problem in the breed — well ahead of anything hereditary.

Keeping an American Shorthair at a Healthy Weight

This breed matures slowly. Full adult size arrives at three to four years, not twelve months — a lean two-year-old is usually still developing, not underweight.
That slow curve is exactly what makes weight gain easy to miss. Once growth stops, the same steady monthly increase is no longer muscle and frame.
Feel for the ribs under light pressure. On a short-coated, heavily built breed this is reliable, and far better than judging by outline.
From above there should be a visible waist behind the ribs. A straight or bulging line means the cat is carrying extra weight.
Free-feeding suits this breed badly. Measure portions and use two or three set meals a day.
Indoor American Shorthairs need deliberate play — this is a cat built to hunt, and boredom eating is common without it.
Weigh monthly and log it. In a breed that grows for four years, the trend line is the only reliable way to separate growth from fat.
Never crash-diet a cat. Rapid weight loss can trigger hepatic lipidosis, a serious liver condition — plan any reduction with your vet.
