Cat Keeping Cats Active In Winter
Winter months often mean cats spend more time indoors, leading many owners to assume their feline friends will naturally stay active. The reality is quite different. Indoor cats can easily slip into a sedentary routine during colder seasons, which can lead to weight gain, muscle loss, and behavioural issues like excessive meowing or destructive scratching.
The key is creating an enriching indoor environment that mimics the mental and physical stimulation cats would naturally seek outdoors. Window perches allow cats to observe the winter landscape, which provides hours of passive entertainment. Rotating toys weekly keeps play sessions novel and engaging—puzzle feeders, feather wands, and laser pointers are particularly effective for encouraging bursts of activity. Consider installing wall-mounted climbing shelves or cat trees to create vertical spaces; cats naturally love heights, and climbing engages their muscles in ways flat surfaces cannot.
Interactive play should happen at least twice daily, ideally in 10–15 minute sessions that mimic hunting behaviour. Even brief, consistent activity prevents winter lethargy and keeps your cat's weight stable through the colder months.
