Cat Hydration & Water Intake
How much water should your cat drink each day?
Cats are notoriously poor drinkers, and many owners don't realise their feline friends should be consuming roughly 50–60 ml of water per kilogram of body weight daily. For a typical 4 kg cat, that's around 200–240 ml per day—roughly a small teacup. Dehydration in cats can lead to serious health issues, including urinary tract problems and kidney disease, so ensuring adequate water intake is one of the most important aspects of feline care.
The challenge is that cats prefer running water and often won't drink from a still bowl. Investing in a cat water fountain can dramatically increase their water consumption, as the moving water appeals to their natural instincts. You can also try placing multiple water bowls around your home, keeping them away from their food and litter box—cats naturally prefer to drink away from where they eat. Some cats also respond well to wet food, which contributes to their overall fluid intake.
Watch for signs of good hydration: your cat's skin should bounce back quickly when gently pinched, and their gums should be moist and pink. If you notice excessive thirst, infrequent urination, or lethargy, contact your vet. Monitoring your cat's water intake regularly helps you catch potential health issues early and keeps your pet thriving.
