Cat Flea Prevention For Indoor Cats
Many cat owners assume indoor cats don't need flea prevention—but that's a common misconception. Fleas can hitch a ride into your home on your clothing, shoes, or through open windows and doors. Even one flea can infest your entire household within weeks, causing discomfort and potential health issues like anaemia or tapeworms.
The good news: prevention is straightforward and far easier than treatment. Talk to your vet about the best option for your cat—whether that's topical treatments, oral medications, or collars. Most modern preventatives are applied monthly or quarterly and work by killing fleas before they can reproduce. Consistency is key: set a reminder for application day so you never miss a dose.
Whilst prevention is your primary defence, regular grooming and vacuuming your home weekly will help catch any stragglers early. Keep an eye out for scratching, tiny black specks in your cat's fur, or red, irritated skin—these are signs fleas may be present. Starting prevention before flea season (or year-round in warmer climates) is always more effective than scrambling to treat an infestation.
